Wiring Solutions: Having Your TV Cleanly Mounted with Organized Wires

Mounting your TV on the wall is a fantastic way to save space and create a sleek, modern look in your living room or media area. But let’s be honest - the wires can quickly turn that clean setup into a tangled mess. I know how frustrating it can be to have cables dangling everywhere, ruining the vibe you worked so hard to create. The good news? With a little planning, we can help you achieve a professional, tidy look that keeps your wires out of sight and your home looking sleek and organized.

In this post, I’ll walk you through some of the options available and some of the "must-haves" and "must-nots".

Planning ahead saves time and money!

Don't pay for services twice! Know your information on the front end before you hire someone to install your equipment. It saves you time and most importantly, money. I am listing some points to consider below that will help you get ready to have someone install your equipment right the first time.

  • Size of the TV: It isn't just based on the size of the room, it is usually determined by the distance you will be seated from the display. Let's face it, we aren't clicking a channel up and down anymore. We are using a guide menu to choose what we want to watch. Being able to comfortably read the menus and guides is a better metric than the picture size itself.

  • Future Proofing Your Needs and Wants: If you aren't going to install a soundbar or sound system but you may want one in the future, it is best to make sure that the wires for that future equipment are in place so that you're not paying an installation professional twice because they have to re-install the tv and run cables to then install new equipment like PS5, Soundbar, etc. Thinking ahead for your future needs saves time and money....Win Win!

  • What Height Should You Mount Your TV: Keep in mind that if this tv will be above the fireplace mantle that you will need to leave enough space below the tv panel for Holiday decor and a future sound device.

  • Not Every TV Fits Every Situation: Think about what kind of tv it's going to be. Some TV's require a special box to be installed for power, for HDMI connections and USB input updates. Some TV panels need the power connection recessed so that the so called "Flat Panel" will actually be flush against the wall. Often people plug up their sound equipment to a nice surge and power conditioner but end up just plugging one the most expensive pieces of equipment, their TV, directly into the wall leaving it completely unprotected. Always plug your TV into a surge protector or an in-wall surge outlet that can be installed before the TV is mounted. Again, this is less expensive to do before the TV installation than after - because they will have to uninstall everything first in that instance, and then reinstall again.

  • Choose Your HDMI Cables Wisely: If the TV is in one location and the equipment is far enough away that you need an HDMI longer than 16' and/or you are going through a surround receiver, then the type of HDMI is quite important. Some HDMI cables say they're 4K or 8K but in the fine print say that that isn't guaranteed over 16' and especially after going through a surround receiver. That means your picture quality will definitely suffer.

If you want your living space to feel calm and organized, investing in a professional installation is money well spent.

WiFi vs Hardwiring

Yes your equipment works with the WiFi, but should it really?

Your internet provider may provide you a Gig speed internet, however that is not what your TV or other electronic devices will get over the WiFi. Especially given obstacles and distances from the router/gateway in your home or office.

Running an Ethernet cable from your network equipment to your electronics will present less strain on your network and faster speeds. Who likes buffering... No One!

Tips for Maintaining Your Tidy Setup Over Time

Once you’ve got your TV mounted and wires organized, you want to keep it that way. Here are some simple habits that help:

  • Dust around your TV and cables to prevent buildup that can cause wear.

  • Keep spare cable ties and labels handy for when you add new devices.

  • Avoid unplugging cables roughly to prevent damage.

  • Update your setup as needed when you get new devices or change your room layout.

  • If you have pets, make sure your amplifiers or other equipment with fans, dust pet hair regularly to ensure the electronics become blocked and overheat.

Keeping your setup tidy is an ongoing process, but it pays off in a clean, enjoyable space.

Why Should You Hire An Expert?

Sometimes, mounting a TV/Sound Equipment and hiding wires isn’t as simple as it looks. With the speed of technological developments these days, hanging a TV on the wall isn't as simple as it was even 10 years ago. So many things complicate installation such as...

  • Mantels and ceilings that are often not level

  • No electrical outlet at location for your installation

  • Some wires at the equipment location are not fully connected in the Smart Panel Box and require testing, toning, tracing out to make them work

  • Complex wiring setups (surround sound, multiple devices).

  • Walls made of brick, concrete, hardy board, or plaster.

  • Smart home integration.

  • Concerns about electrical safety

  • And many more obstacles to "simple installation"

It’s a good idea to call in professionals who specialize in smart home and AV installations. They have the tools and experience to do the job cleanly and safely, saving you time and stress.
